Titanate–core Golf Balls Said to Perform Better
Salvatore Monte of Kenrich Petrochemicals Inc, N.J., was struck by remarks about titanium-core golf balls that, when sawed in half, were found not to contain titanium metal but “rubber and clay bound together by isopropyltriisostearoyl titanate (C&EN).
Monte writes, “I am the inventor of the… titanate mentioned.” What was found in the golf ball, more specifically, he says, “was a magnesium carbonate-filled, dicumyl peroxide-cured, trimethylol propane trimethacrylate monomer containing polybutadiene elastomer coupled with an isopropyltriisostearoly titanate.” One dimly understands why the golf ball company (Wilson Sporting Goods) chooses to promote a titanium core rather than an isopropyltriisostearoyl titanate core.
Marketing strategy aside, Monte says, “the titanate provides a real function. The isopropyl group couples the triisostearoly titanate to the magnesium carbonate in atomic monolayers. Then the titanium in the titanate…repolymerizes… the polybutadiene during the compounding and curing phase.” The repolymerization of the elastomer yields significantly higher strain strength (elongation per unit length) and slightly higher tensile strength (force per unit area).
The greater elongation, Monte says, causes the elastomer to compress over more surface of the driver’s club head, which gives the ball a “fatter” feel when you strike it. The higher tensile strength gives a larger coefficient of restitution, causing the ball to come off the club head faster with greater spin.
The titanate poly seems to be working, Monte reports. In September, both Wilson and Penn Racquet Sports introduced titanium tennis balls. The company claims that the new balls are more durable and perform better on all court surfaces than do their predecessors.
